How the income tax calculator works

Federal income tax is progressive: your taxable income (gross income minus the standard deduction) is split across brackets, and each slice is taxed at its own rate, so only the income above each threshold is taxed at the higher rate. This tool uses the 2026 brackets and standard deduction.

Social Security and Medicare (FICA) are separate, flat payroll taxes (6.2% Social Security up to the annual wage base, 1.45% Medicare on all wages, plus 0.9% above high-income thresholds). They are not part of your income-tax refund.

Your refund is simply the income tax withheld from your paychecks minus your actual tax for the year. Withhold more than you owe and you get a refund; withhold less and you owe the difference. Enter your federal tax withheld (W-2 box 2) and, if you pick a state, your state tax withheld (box 17) to see the estimate.

What this does and doesn't include

It estimates federal and state income tax on W-2 wage income using the standard deduction. It does not include tax credits (such as the Child Tax Credit or EITC), itemized deductions, self-employment tax, capital gains, or other income types. For those, use the self-employed and capital-gains calculators, or talk to a tax accountant.
